China's Special Envoy to Attend International Talks for Peaceful Settlement of Ukraine Crisis

China's foreign ministry announced that Special Envoy for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui will travel to Jeddah for international talks focused on resolving the Ukraine crisis peacefully. Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for the Chinese ministry, expressed China's willingness to collaborate with the international community in seeking a political resolution. The meeting in Jeddah is expected to bring together senior officials from approximately 40 countries, aiming to agree on crucial principles for a future peace settlement to end Russia's involvement in Ukraine's war. Notably, Moscow will not be present at the talks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed hope that this initiative would lead to a global "peace summit" in the autumn, where world leaders can endorse the principles based on his 10-point formula for peace. Securing China's support in these talks is of paramount importance, as China has maintained close ties with Russia and previously abstained from condemning the invasion. In the past, China was invited to participate in similar talks in Copenhagen but did not attend. Achieving China's endorsement would be a significant diplomatic achievement in the effort to resolve the Ukraine crisis peacefully.
